Take Your Damned Medicine!!!!

When the weather dramatically changes, colds or coughs peak up.  Three weeks ago, our youngest son, Tank, came home coughing.  He said, “Aahhhh Mom, no worries; it’s just a cough from my allergies. I’ve got it under control.”

Last night, at midnight, I got tired of listening to Tank cough, nonstop.  I got out of bed and went into the kitchen, pulled out the honey (locally grown of course), and lightly heated two tablespoons full.  Then I went into his bedroom, and told him he had better swallow this honey. The honey will coat his throat and stop his coughing. This will have to do until I get up in the morning, and make some fresh homemade cough syrup.

Just 2 tablespoons of heated honey stopped his coughing, he slept through the night……and so did I.

This morning I made two separate cough syrups, one without alcohol and another with.  When our son comes home from work in the early morning hours he will take “Best Cough Syrup Ever” before going to bed to help with his terrible cough.

I went on the computer and printed out  “Best Cough Syrup Ever”  (non alcohol) from Enola Gay over at the Paratus Familia blog.

I also found this recipe for “Paw Paw’s Cough Syrup” (with alcohol) from COOKS.Com.

Initially I had a pint jar, had to change to a quart jar.

I made both recipes, and I highly recommended using either one for dealing with continuous cough, and sore throat.

Both are very easy to make as long as you have all the ingredients at home.
I’ve tasted both of these cough syrups and both taste really good.  I have no hesitation using either one to take care of a cough or a sore throat.

  1. That's very interesting Sandy. Thanks for the post!

  2. I suspect the Honey with it's anti-bacterial properties would work just on it's own but the other ingredients certainly can't hurt :)

You didn't have to beat him with a wooden spoon to take it did ya?

    1. PP,

The raw honey works really good......adding the other ingredients helps even more. Both of these cough syrups taste pretty good, and you know the adults and kids(non alcohol) will take them when it's needed.

No beating with a wooden spoon, just a verbal threat did the trick!!!!

  3. What an excellent post, Sandy. Why is it we humans have a tendency to "tough it out"? I need to try these recipes.

    1. Leigh,

I believe we tough it out because we don't want to have to depend on pharmaceutical prescriptions. There does come a point when a person has been sick for a long enough period of time, they're tired, and it's time to turn things around. We try to use natural cures here at home.

  4. Sweet Sandy - both of those recipes are awesome - thanks for sharing! another thing that will kick a cough or a cold straight out of you is to crush a raw clove of garlic in a cup, add local un-pasteurized honey, ginger and lemon/lime or orange. if you sip this tea 2 or 3 times a day, the cold and cough will go away and if you have one cup a week when you are healthy, it acts like an antibiotic and you will get sick fewer and fewer times in the year. tell Tank to get better! much love to you and yours, always!

    1. Sweet Kymber,

You're welcome sweetie!!! Garlic is great for many things however, I've found when I get older my tolerance for garlic isn't what is used to be. I can only take just a little bit before I get sick. I react to to much garlic. I will keep your recipe for family members who love garlic. Tank had better get better soon or I'm going to have to find ear plugs, lol......
      Love to you and Jam.
      Your Friend,
      Sandy

    1. JUGM,

Both syrups taste really good. I would lean more toward the one with the alcohol because it will do two things. Help the cough, and help me sleep :-)
I so understand about not being on the PC as much. Life keeps us busy, I haven't been on lately myself. You'll get to your e-mails when you get to them. There's no rush, family and life come first in my book!!!!
Hugs and love to you, Senior, and your Boys.

  7. Thank you for these two good recipes! I am definitely saving them for the next time they're needed. Luckily, neither hubby nor I succumb to much of anything . . . but it never hurts to have good, natural remedies on hand.

I had a doctor tell me that the over the counter cough syrups have to be made so "weak" that they hardly do any good at all. People would abuse them if they were made strong enough to do any good!

    1. Mama Pea,

You're welcome!!! Both make for great cough syrups. My son has stopped coughing, and is sleeping well. Good thing you haven't had a cold.....it's no fun being sick in this weather :-)

People seem to find ways to abuse medications......I just don't get people when they do that. They're so many restrictions with over the counter meds because of the abuse.

  8. My wife uses Robutussin DM and I use Nyquil. I am too sorry to make my own cough syrup, which is inexcusable because I know the day may come when there won't be any pharmacies to run into.

    1. Harry,

For now the Robutussin DM and Nyquil work for you and your wife. When there are no over the counter medications, that's when we all will need to make our own meds. No worries for now!

    1. M.E.,

My pleasure! Use what was prescribed to you......it's making a difference. Bronchitis and pneumonia will kick the crap out of a person. I'm so glad you're getting better and soon you'll have your strength back. Keep the recipes handy for future use :)
