Spring Is Finally Here - Gardening

The weather finally started to feel like spring without the low temperatures, winds, thunder, lightning, rain, freeze, tornadoes, and hail.  It was beautiful today, temperatures peaked around 72 degrees, the sun was out, and there was a nice breeze.  So beautiful, I spent most of the afternoon out in the garden.
Several of the garden boxes were prepped before winter initially started.  I cleared out all the old vegetable plants, placed new compost, and covered each bed with straw.
Now that the temperatures are truly conducive to working outside, it really feels like spring, I found myself outside working on the above ground garden beds.
I pulled out all the straw, including the areas that started growing, placed all the dry straw in a container to reuse elsewhere, and discarded the wet straw.  Then I moved to setting up my tires for potato growing.  I laid down the news papers, placed one set of tires over each newspaper, placed a layer of compost in the center of the tire, placed my potato seed pieces (regular and sweet), covered each tire center with straw, placed another tire on top of the first and then watered each since finished. In several weeks I should see potato vines poking out of the straw; at that point I will need to place more straw to cover the vine while the potatoes continue to grow.

Grass - Garden - Give - Away

With all this rain we’ve been having, our grass has grown, and it needed cutting.  Today, I worked outside picking up trash that blew in from all the extreme weather and cut the grass.   While walking around the property, I noticed an area of grass that seemed to have a circular mark, almost like an out cropping, and it had mushrooms growing along the outer edge.

The front flower beds are finally showing some life, the seeds have started to germinate and pop out of the ground.

*****I’ve purchased more seeds (Cumin, Cilantro, Red Romaine, Spaghetti and Butternut Squash, Cipollina  Onions, Collards, Arugula, Amaranth, Sweet Chocolate peppers, Long Ribbed and Rhubarb Red Chard) from Baker Creek.  I can’t wait to get these seeds eventually planted.

Oklahoma Bad Weather

Severe weather producing hail the size of baseballs, bad rain, thunder, lightning, heavy winds, circular movement in the sky, and several tornadoes touched down around the Lawton area.  Storm’s heading north, north east.  Ya’ll need to be careful with this storm.  Go to your safe place. I’m keeping everyone in my prayers.  I’m going to snatch up the animals and head for the closet.

*****Store Recommendation****** Great Find, The Faithful Prepper - Give - Away

Just by chance hubby (Bulldog Man) and I came across this store when driving through the town of Noble, Oklahoma this weekend while visiting yard and estate sales.   After going home to return our found items from the sales, and walking the four legged critters, we drove back to Noble to visit this store that caught our interest.

The store, “The Faithful Prepper”, Owned and operated by Proprietor Stephen Guillory and General Manager Kacy Oxford. This store, a Christian based store was Opened, July 4, 2012.
General Manager Kacy Oxford (Picture Source Faithful Prepper)
Because of where we live, you don’t see stores like this or military surplus in this location.  One must commute into or near Oklahoma City to be able to see or purchase homestead preparation materials.
“The Faithful Prepper” carries a large range of items varying from body armor (Amendment II dealer), the display armor (Centurion Tactical Vest and Rynohide armor panels), military surplus, knives, first aid supplies, parachute cord, canteens, sleeping bags, mats, tools, pouches,  long term food storage, water filters, books, manuals, natural soaps, washboards and various other items of interest.
Bulldog Man and I had the opportunity to spend time talking with Stephen Guillory and took our time checking out the entire store.  We felt like two kids in a candy store.  You couldn’t ask for better customer service and the prices on items were very reasonable.
We enjoyed Stephen’s display of body armor panels, and we’re able to observe the damage rendered on the armor panels, little to none with various bullet types 226, 9mm and 45 calibers.
A few pictures of some of the items on display, many more items available in the store.

“The Faithful Prepper” also offers monthly classes from visiting instructors.  Here’s a sample of some of the classes schedule this month.  Basic Gun Cleaning and Intro to Hand Signals, Primitive Fire Starting Techniques and Prepper Potluck (not a class, a get together of like minded people).   Check out “The Faithful Prepper” website for the calendar of classes being offered at the present time.
For those who are just starting out with a homestead, or have had a homestead for a while and you live in or near Oklahoma, please don’t hesitate to stop in and visit  “The Faithful Prepper” located 307 North Main Street, Suite A, Noble, Oklahoma 73068.    I know Bulldog Man and I will be returning to shop at “The Faithful Prepper” who knows you may just run into us there.

Welcome - Join - Thank You- Yard & Estate Sales - Keep Your Eyes Open - Give - Away

Welcome Nancy Claeys. Thank you for joining my blog, please sit back and enjoy the ride.
*****

With the wind blowing through this part of Oklahoma, Bulldog Man and I decided to delay our fishing expedition this weekend.  Instead, we decided to go to yard and estate sales, totaling about 16 places.  We came back with a few finds.  A 50 year old food grinder for $5.00, pastry cutter 50 cents, nice flower pot $5.00 and a large cherub to add to our garden area $5.00.

Our landlord also came by to check on the house after all this strange weather we had last week, and to also fix the roof where we lost shingles from the wind.

We also came across this awesome store everyone in Oklahoma should visit, stay tune for tomorrow’s post on this awesome place, and a new give-away I purchased there.

After the Storm - Prayers To Friends

Tuesday the humidity levels raised dramatically here, the dry line hung just to the west of our house on Tuesday.  Then around 6:15PM the winds picked up, the dry line moved to the east of us and our temperatures dropped dramatically.  Then between 2 – 3 AM all hell broke loose.  We had heavy winds, temperatures dropped to 28 degrees, lightning, thunder, and hail.  At around 6AM the ice started to form on trees, and the ground, and then it started to snow.  Temperatures rose to 32 degrees later in the day. The weather finally passed here, temperatures today were 32 degrees this morning, and 56 degrees this afternoon, the sun is out, and the moisture on the ground is starting to dry up.

We weathered the storm okay and we were totally prepared for anything to happen.  The only damage, a few shingles on the roof needing replaced, and trash that blew in onto the property needs picking up.

The weather people here are now telling us to expect another cold front, and bad weather end of next week.

Thank you to all my friends for the kinds words about being careful while the storm came through.

Now, I’m sending prayers and warm thoughts to all of my friends who are in the pathway of this horrific storm.  Please be careful, and hunker down.

What Do You Think?

Time to roll the dice; will it be severe thunder storms with tornadoes or a freezing snow storm?  We live in Oklahoma, where the weathermen all have said to expect the worst starting after 7PM tonight.  Remember it’s April 9th, what do you think we will end up experiencing tonight?
