Winter Garden?

Several Blogger friends asked if I was going to plant a winter garden.  I’ve planted beans (Bush) and peas (Tall Telephone), still looking at other possibilities.

Here are some of the beans popping out of the ground.  These were planted Friday evening and started popping out of the ground on Monday morning.

The peas started popping but they’re not big enough for a picture.

Every time I talk about planting beans, our dog “BEANS” sits pretty, thinking we’re talking about him.

Have you started your winter garden?

  1. What an interesting idea. Some years I have mint, chives, and other herbs through part of the Winter. I feel as if this Winter will be challenging, so I did not have any specific plans. I really should grow some varieties of sprouts in the house.

    1. Jane,

Thanks! You'll be able to grow sprouts real easy inside your home. I'm trying to get a few beans and peas before the temperatures get to cold.

    1. Sweet Kymber,

I laughed too, Beans really thought I was talking about him. He's my ham, I love him dearly. I would say to Bulldog Man, come outside and look at the beans how much they've grown in just 4 days. Beans jumps up as if to say.....you're talking about me again and yes I'm a good boy........now give me the damn cookie bahahahahaha.....

  4. I've got my cabbage in! Does that count? I'm so glad you did another post! It gets lonely not having anyone's blog that I can leave numerous comments on.

You should be getting something in the mail by Wednesday. I made THE BEST Burritos today, with chilis I got from my internet hero. Then I used my food saver to save the rest in the freezer.

    1. As long as you're planting something it counts!!!

Burritos are a wonderful staple. Food savers are a great tool to save on money and food.

You know it was not necessary send anything, thank you.

I have to laugh, it was so rainy here this summer I didn't even get a Spring garden to make anything!
Good luck with your Winter garden.

    1. Kimberly,

And that is okay, besides you were moving into your new place. Thank you, I'm hoping I get some beans and peas to can or freeze before it gets cold here.

    1. Buttons,

Beans grow quick in gardens, so do peas. If you want something to harvest fast...beans, peas, and lettuce.

Thank you on the dogs name!!! He's our first rescued Chihuahua.

  7. I have snap peas, bush beans, romaine lettuce, butter head lettuce and carrots growing for my fall garden. This is my first year growing a fall garden, so I am hoping this goes well.

    1. Hey Heather,

I'm pretty sure your garden will do just fine. Be prepared for a large harvest on the beans and lettuce.

  8. Humm .. it's been my goal for the past three years. Maybe it's not too late for some radishes and lettuce. I've got a hoop covering when it gets too cold.

    1. Mrs. Mac,

The hoop is something I need to investigate and maybe make or pickup for next season.

  9. I don't usually plant a Winter garden. By this time of the year I am about all gardened out.

Maybe some turnips might be good though.

    1. PP,

I can imagine you are with everything you plant on your homestead.

Turnips would be good to plant. Or maybe some more OKRA, lol.....

  10. I never have enough energy left for a winter garden. You'd looks so pretty. I think you will have to start using the term legumes.

    1. Michaele,

This is a first for me on a fall garden.

I guess I should call them legumes, lol

  11. I love that you have a dog named beans. :)

I hadn't thought about planting beans in the fall. I do plant peas, but mostly cool weather crops like greens and roots. Which reminds me, I was going to plant some collard and cabbage seeds to day!

  12. Leigh,

We thought the name fit him.....he's chubby, and the color of a pinto bean.

This morning I planted more things in the garden. Carrots, broccoli, cucumbers and squash. I worry about those darn squash bugs, every time I plant squash I get them.

    1. John,

Thanks, his coloring is that of a pinto bean.
I guess you could say the size isn't that far off either, lol
