Go Ahead Make My Day

Tank Testing His Welder-Generator

After settling his case relating to his hand being rebuilt, our son, Tank recently decided to treat himself to a tool relating to his profession.  He bought a nice commercial grade welder-generator combination.  He had the welder-generator loaded on his flatbed truck with plans of securing to the bed of the truck to avoid theft and/or misuse.  He hasn’t gotten that far yet.   Now we do live in a nice quiet area, we have security lights all around our place, and we’re on the edge of town.

On Saturday night, right after our son purchased his generator; he pulled his truck into our driveway and parked it there for the night, thinking it would be secure, and no one would bother it.

Sure!!!!!

Around 11:15PM, I’m sitting in the living room watching a little TV. Bulldog Man just finished reading a book, and was in bed, just turning out the lights; our son, Tank, is already in bed sound to sleep, snoring like a log.

A commercial comes on the TV; I mute the sound in order not to hear the commercial.  That’s when I heard a whistle…………….one of those whistles to let someone know something was up. I got up out of my chair, and looked out the back window, and didn’t see a thing.  I proceed to the front of our house to check on my son’s welder sitting on his flatbed truck.  I see someone running from the side of our home to a car sitting out in the road with all the lights off, and the driver side doors open.  I can’t see our son’s truck because he pulled in the driveway instead of backing in like he always does.  I go into my bedroom and alert Bulldog Man; we get our guns, and go back to our front door.  We look out the window, and still can’t see clear enough to figure out what was going on.  Both Bulldog Man and I check our front porch, no one’s on it or close by.  We open the front door in the dark just enough to attempt to see what’s going on.  And we hear what sounds like a generator running.  We look at each other and say “son of a gun (actually we used another word)”, can’t move the generator to steal it so you’re going to use it.  Now remember, our son hasn’t had an opportunity to bolt down this welder or put a security box over it.  I lock our front door, and Bulldog Man and I run to the garage through the house.  I pull the security locks on the garage door; we both looked at one another in preparation of what’s going to happen next. We both said, “Let’s do this”.  I pushed the garage door button in the open position, and both Bulldog Man and I were ready for what was on the other side of that door.  The security lights come on, Bulldog Man went to one side of the truck and I went to the other side; the generator was not running.  The sound was coming from down on the road, it was one of those little compact air compressors you use for blowing up your tires.

An unknown subject was walking around a vehicle out in the road, the compressor was working, and the other subject who ran from the side of our house through our bushes was sitting inside this vehicle.

After seeing both Bulldog Man and I fully armed and ready to protect our property both subjects took off as fast as they could and never looked back.

The moral of this post; even if you live in a quiet safe location, you just never know what’s going to happen when you least expect it.

So always be prepared!

It doesn't matter where you live. Country, small town, or city you always have to be careful.

  3. Why didn't you guys open fire...???? All BS aside, did they actually steal something.

  4. Stephen,

They didn't steal any thing, and there was no imminent threat but they know now they are not welcome.

    1. They also know you come outside with guns, so they will spread the word and you will never have trouble from them or their friends.

Thanks, I believe our history, work, and practice has a lot to do with how we reacted to the situation.

Thank you! We try to be alert at all times.
Yes, Tank was sound to sleep. He didn't hear one thing. He had worked a long couple of days and was exhausted.

    1. PP,
Having the ability to see someone before they committee a crime is the best option to have. Having farm land, gives one the ability to catch a subject trespassing in advance before they make it to your home or farm.

  10. Great job!! DH and I REALLY need to practice more with different scenarios. I've had to "clear" the house just about a month ago when I thought that someone had broken in and although I was as nervous as heck, I know that our past training (albeit not nearly enough) helped keep me calmer.

Oh, and the window that was open? You know the one that made me think someone had broken in? DH had opened it and forgot to shut it before he left. Could have killed him :)

    1. Thanks Carolyn,

Oh Carolyn, I would want to kill my husband too if he had did this.

This was not the first time we've had to pull out our guns, and won't be the last. One must prepare as much as possible when it comes to protecting your family. As the economy keeps going down hill, crime will rise, always be aware of your surroundings and what's going on.

My husband and I were saying the same thing. Were tired of the drama/excitement. All we want to do is live in quiet, and enjoy our place.
