Salad - Bug Boot Made For Chewing- Upcoming Give - Away

Today was vegetable day for dinner.   I baked several hefty potatoes for everyone with the fixings for the top (butter, sour cream, cottage cheese, cheddar cheese, bacon, and chives), and a large green salad with lettuce from my garden.

Here are the greens I clipped from the garden to add to the salad.
Arugula

Red Romaine

Big Boston

Winter Destiny

Rocky Top

The birds have targeted my kale and beets this year, I have just the stalks sitting in the garden.  The leaves are all gone, little stinkers!!!  I didn’t have an opportunity to cover certain garden boxes with bird netting before they ate my vegetables.

Today, I took Bug to our normal Vet for a follow up from the visit to the Emergency Vet, Saturday night.  My regular Vet said Bug’s paw looks really good, he did a laser treatment on her paw.  This helps the skin to heal faster and healthier.  My Vet then wrapped Bug’s paw with a pink boot.  I wanted to get home and take a picture of Bug in her pink boot to share it with my friends, especially “B” over at Buttons Thoughts blog.  “B” in the winter or when it’s cold wears these really nice pink Cadillac boots and I thought she would get a hoot out of seeing the picture.  When I went to get the camera, Bug had already removed the boot.  So much for a picture of Bug with a pink boot L  Sorry “B”!!!!  Bulldog Man and I had to make a new boot to replace the once Bug removed and destroyed.

In a day or two, I have another give-away to talk to you about.  Something we use in the kitchen to help with baking and cooking.  Keep an eye out for the give-away for a chance to enter and potentially win.

What have you harvested from your garden recently to have for lunch or dinner?

  3. We've been eating asparagus .. it's about finished now .. lot's of lettuce, kale, radish, rhubarb and strawberries .. oh and a sweet onion. Raspberries are setting fruit .. so is our cherry tree. This year I caged my strawberries and put a bird net over the top .. so far we have not had them pecked by the birds. How fun .. a giveaway.

    1. Mrs. Mac,

Asparagus, yum! Ours has bolted, maybe next year we'll have some to harvest.

Kale, radish, rhubarb, strawberries and onion all are great things to be growing and eating for meals. I also have sweet onions but our wild birds seem to like them. I planted those Italian cipolin onions.

Yes Ma'am, a nice give-away from the International Pantry.

    1. Kimberly,

Soon my friend you'll have all kinds of lettuce. You're in a different part of the country therefore, your planting is a little later than ours. A good thing is lettuce grows very fast.

  6. Oh I would have loved to see Bug in a Pink Cadillac Boot:) Oh I am so sorry he has to wear it but I am sure it looks adorable.
Your salad fixin's look good the Kale I have in my garden does not have bugs yet but I am sure they will find it.
I imagine Bug and I walking in the bush with matching boots looking so adorable and the bears and turkeys taking notice and I think I hear one of them whistling. "Bug quit chasing those turkeys":) Take care Bug. B

    1. B,

Bug is a little sweet girl that loves to keep removing the boots which are taped on. She would love to walk through the woods with you. She just loves walks and car rides.

Watch out for the birds, they like kale too.

Bug love chasing moving things, lol

    1. MDR,

These are my late spring lettuce. I started late because of the weather and my travels. The lettuce held up very well. I did however, water twice a day (early morning and late evening). Give it another two weeks and everything will dry up.

I'm waiting to start fall planting.

I have to admit, my strawberries seem to like the heat, there growing like weeds.

  8. Since our garden is so far behind everyone else's, all we've had so far are lots of salad greens and radishes. (Oh, how I LOVE radishes!)

When our dog was attacked by another dog, she took the stitches out of her abdomen the first night she was home after the surgery. Arrrgh. Needless to say, after that she had to wear one of those darn collars for quite a while.

    1. Mama Pea,

Soon you'll have all kinds of stuff growing and we will be all dried up waiting to fall plant our gardens. The heat is starting to hit us now.

I have a collar but she won't go any where. She stands still, won't go out to the bathroom, won't lay down, just stands there shaking and I can't leave her there all day like that.

  9. The lettuce looks so fresh and inviting! I have never had a bird problem in the garden. I don't know what I would do if I started loosing my kale. I love it so.

    1. Michaele,

The lettuce is delicious and so fresh. I believe I again need to move my bird feeder. Last year I moved it out and now need to move if farther. I don't know what else to do other than apply more bird netting.

The lettuce is really good this year. You and your wife didn't plant a garden?

  11. We have been eating snap peas like crazy. Hubby loves them (planted them for him) but I am afraid we will all be sick of them in a month or so. LOL. I have started to freeze them so that we will have yummy peas to eat in the winter.

I have never grown lettuce before. I might have to try it next spring or maybe this fall. Any tips for a newbie lettuce grower?

    1. Heather,

I love snapped peas, I could eat them right from the garden :-)

Heather, lettuce is very easy to grow and it grows fast. I started mine right from the seed outside. Make sure you have a good soil mixture with compost and a little peat moss, make a hole in the dirt 3X's the size of the seed, drop seed in hole, cover, and water daily. In about 5-7 days, you will see little seedlings popping up every where.

    1. JMD,

I'm sorry to hear your garden has burnt up with the heat. Mine will be doing the same very soon!

This year wasn't very good for gardens here in Oklahoma. Winter stayed longer than expected, Spring was just a handful of days and now summer is roaring in with temperatures reaching 100.

  13. I love that Rocky top lettuce!...I am going to have to look for some seed now....We are eating squash and tomatoes. I have teeny tiny green beans forming. I was so late planting. I took a bag of corn from the freezer that was bagged in June last year. My corn is only knee high right now. If the sun doesn't fry the plants maybe we'll have some by the end of July or early August.

I am happy Bug is mending! Too bad we missed the pink boot!
