The Big One

Here’s a picture of the fog on the ground when driving into the lake to go fishing.

This part of my post is for Jambaloney over at Framboise Manor.  Bulldog Man and I went fishing over the weekend, down at Lake of the Arbuckles.  Both Bulldog Man and I caught fish; this was the only one that was legal in size (actually above and beyond size).  A 17 inch, 4+pound Large Mouth Bass and I caught it.

I’ll have you know Bulldog Man came over to this spot, fished for a little while, didn’t get any bites, and moved on to the next spot on the lake.  I moved into the area he just left, and within 3 minutes, I caught this beautiful Large Mouth Bass.  Bulldog Man was so upset, he threatened to steal my crank bait……..this could have been his catch, but he left the area--too bad……so sad………………~HA~……..the fish was cleaned, placed in a food saver bag. and frozen for eating later. I promise to share a filet from this fish with Bulldog Man when it’s cooked up.

I found this old steamer for $4.33 cents at an estate sale in town and snatched it up.  It will work great over a camp fire, or stove, for steaming vegetables and fish (notice I’m mentioning fish again….just to aggravate Bulldog Man a little more).

Here’s a picture of one of my pots of corn, it’s doing okay…..not as well as expected with this heat, and the winds from the west we’ve been dealing with.  I need to tell my FIL to stop sending the winds from New Mexico to Oklahoma; he just loves sharing the weather with us!

My green peppers are doing pretty good for themselves.  Here’s a few pictures of the peppers growing upside down (this is normal for this particular pepper plant).

I had to take this picture of this tiny little baby cucumber and share it with y’all.  I have approximately 65 of these little babies.  Here’s hoping for some nice homemade pickles soon.

Two days ago, I planted Cherokee Trail of Tears seeds I received from SciFiChick last spring and they’re starting to pop out of the ground.  Looking good!!!  Bulldog Man will be building me another trellis for the beans to grow upward.

Here’s a look at some watermelon and pumpkin seeds poking through the soil.  I made sure to limit their space because I don’t want them growing all over the place.

Bulldog Man and I picked another large bowl of green beans.  We thought this would be the last.  When looking through the vines we have plenty more small beans still growing, along with blossoms.  It looks like we will get maybe 4 to 5 more harvests, before pulling the vines up, and replanting the area with Lincoln Peas.

Our little buddy, Beans. came out to help in the garden and decided it’s too darn hot outside and turned around to head back for the door.  He wanted inside where it’s much cooler.  Poor little guy has been dealing with allergy issues with his ears and paws.  We’ve taken him to the Vet, received antibiotics, special sprays for his ears and paws, and he’s been on Benadryl and is feeling much better.

  2. See that's why it never pays for a man to take his wife or significant other fishing. You cast a lure and hope a fish bites but if you are unlucky while the Woman gets the fish they never let you hear the end of it and it's like they are casting some question on your Manhood or something. However let it happen the other way around and it's all OK and he better share.

I would have tossed you into the lake :)

    Just Kidding...

The stray we have now is allergic to flashlights. If you take one outside and shine it on him he runs and hides. Does that count?

    1. PP,

Actually Bulldog Man loves it when I go fishing with him. Tell me how many men actually can get their wives to fish, bait a hook, take the fish off the hook, gut the fish, and cook it?? Not many will do all of this. He even loves the teasing!!!

Tossing me in the lake would have cooled me off, it was so hot out there.

I know you're kidding but those fishing hooks don't, lol........
Ask my husband about our fishing trip in Virginia where he was bent over fixing our son's fishing rod and I pulled on my line trying to get it unstuck. It went flying across the embankment and nailed him right in the A%$. He had the biggest bruise, and it didn't go away for sometime.

No that doesn't count as an allergic reaction. That count's as you warning......you only have 5 seconds to leave or you will suffer from lead poisoning.....

  3. Your garden is doing great. I didn't try cukes this first growing year but I'll put them on the list for next year. Nice job, can't wait to see some pickling!! Do you trellis them or let them run along the ground?

    1. 1st Man,

Thank you so much, I think my garden is doing much better this year than last. This year I put up a wire trellis for the cucumbers to climb. Every day I go out and take the runners and weave them up the trellis in order to train them.

There is nothing better than fresh veggies and a good piece of meat or fish.

  5. Miss Izzy has a constant allergy battle. We've tried everything, paid the vet hundreds and hundreds of dollars. The only thing that seems to work is more baths (which she hates), and keeping her on a chicken and rice only diet.

    1. Izzy,

I'm so sorry to hear about Miss Izzy. Miss Izzy's allergies sound like there constant and not seasonal. Every year around this time of year poor Beans has a reaction on his paws and in his ears. We have this special cleaner we use in his ears and then a special medicated drops. This clears it up, it costs us approximately $32, not counting the antibiotics, and Bendryl. I asked the Vet about switching the dog food to a hypoallergenic and she said not to because this is just a seasonal reaction.

Do you make the chicken and rice for Miss Lizzy or buy the dog food?

  6. I have had many animals with allergies. the first place to start is changing the food to a grain free food. do not do it suddenly but over the space of 7-10 days. The allergies can keep getting worse, so try to pinpoint the culprit.
In dogs they say allergies come out in ears and rears and paws.
    Good luck!!!!

    1. Longtime Wife,

The Vet suggested not to change the food because his allergies are only seasonal, not continuous. I'm keeping an eye on him to see if he has any other issues regarding the food. He's been eating plain dry food and loves it.
      Thanks!!!

  8. My dog has a skin rash from allergies which causes his hair to fall out. Hopefully after the Spring allergy season is over his skin will clear up.

  9. I wish Dan was interested in fishing. It would make a great outing, but he's never been one to sit still for long, LOL

One of our cats is allergic to flea bites. If I keep the fleas under control, he's okay. We used to have a dog that I finally figured out was allergic to corn, which is common in most dog foods. Once I switched to raw meaty bones and a corn-free kibble, his problem cleared up. I hope you get yours figured out.

    1. Leigh,

Surprisingly enough, we don't sit we walk along the the bank and are constantly moving because of the type of bait were using. I bet you and Dan would enjoy fishing, and stocking up your freezer with fish.

The Vet figured out Beans wouldn't leave his toe nails alone and kept biting them. Which in turn caused his paws to be constantly wet. At which point a yeast infection grew, causing the allergies to kick off. The dog was put on antibiotics, allergy meds and is now doing fine. I've stocked up on what's needed to prevent this from happening again.
