Welcome - Join - Thank You - Garden - Peach & Strawberry Crumble

I would like to start my post today by welcoming a new blogger to my blog. Welcome Michaele at Sprout 'n' Wings Farm blog. Thank you for joining my blog, please sit back and enjoy the ride.  For those of you who don’t know it, Michaele and her daughters have a business that sells lotions, body butters and soap made of goats’ milk that is out of this world. Check out their business site here, you won’t be disappointed.

The weather finally warmed up enough to start working out on the property with my gardens. Bug wasn’t too happy with me; I left her in the house so I could plant flower seeds in the dirt.  She just loves to roll around upside down in the dirt, and I really didn’t want to have to clean her up before bringing her in the house; so she had to stay inside while I played in the dirt.
I tackled the front porch flower boxes.  I started pulling up all the weeds and leaves, leveled out the existing soil, added new garden soil to the boxes, and mixed the old soil with the new soil.

I then replaced the chicken wire on top of the garden before planting my seeds.  Okay, I can see you’re questioning why I have chicken wire on top of my garden boxes.  I do this to prevent the feral cats in the area from using my flower boxes as litter boxes.  The feral cats don’t like me too much, but I’m okay with that.

With my fingers, I created 3 rows by making little holes, and then I planted Amaranth in the row closest to the house in each flower box.  The second row, I planted Chamomile and Shasta daisies.  The final row, I planted Texas Blue Bonnets.

Then I watered each flower bed really well.  Now I need to find metal clips like those used for holding tents down, to help keep the chicken wire down in the flower garden beds.

Bulldog Man loves peach cobbler, and I knew I had a bag of frozen peaches in the freezer and some fresh strawberries I needed to use. So instead of making a cobbler for hubby, I made a peach and strawberry crumble.  I used this recipe recently found on the Food Network Site by Giada De Laurentiis.  The crumble was out of this world; Bulldog Man rated it with 4 paws.

  2. Great idea using the chicken wire. The flowerbeds will be beautiful when in bloom, you'll have to show photos. The crumble sounds like something the hubster would love!

    1. Katie,

Thanks on the chicken wire. I tried everything and this was my final straw. The crumble is amazing.
I will provide pictures once the flowers are up and blooming.

  3. I am so glad it has warmed up for us now. This has been the only true few days of actual warmth I think we have had in almost 6 months.

  4. Oh, how I wish chicken wire would keep the CHICKENS out of my garden. They just scratch it up! Glad you found a way to keep the feral kitties out of your garden. Let poor Bug out! How hard could it be to give that little furball a bath (or three)?

    1. The secret to keeping the wire down, tent stakes (I'm getting them this weekend).

I do let her out to play and do her business, it's still to chilly to give her a bath multiple times a day.

She's a ham, can you tell?

  5. Bug is so cute! Great job on the beds. Wonder if chicken wire would keep the squirrels out too?

The crumble sounds wonderful as well.

    1. I'm not sure if it will, you could try and lay some out and use some cheap tent stakes to keep it down on the sides and ends.

I have another way to get rid of squirrels, if I mention it, I would get into trouble.

    2. I bet it's the same way my 80+ year old MIL & FIL get rid of Armadildos :~) Then they put them in the back of the truck & drive a few miles to throw them off a nearby bridge (at midnight I might add). It's a wonder the police didn't catch them!
