Blanching Broccoli

I found a great deal on a 3 pound bag of broccoli florets and didn’t want it to go to waste.  I decided to blanch the florets for future meals.
3 pounds of Broccoli Florets remove from bag and wash

Throw florets into boiling water for 3 minutes only
Remove florets and immediately throw them in a bowl
of ice water to stop the florets from cooking
Remove from ice water and dry excess water off of florets
Lettuce spinner helps to remove water off of florets
Excess water removed
Place florets on towel to help get rid of remaining water
Seal florets in Food Saver bags, then place in freezer
**note if Food Saving broccoli, you may have to dry out seal tray
several times.  The machine sucks out any extra water from bag
before sealing.

I know you would do the same if you came across a deal………….right?

  1. I would do the same thing. I have fresh boneless chicken breasts coming 4/2 & plan on canning them.

    1. I'm trying to get all of my canning, freezing and dehydrating done on bought items before my garden beds come time to harvest in the summer.

  2. I found a really good deal on broccoli several years ago at the grocery store. I bought a few, blanched and froze. Then, I made a half dozen trips back to buy more. I put it up in pints and quart freezer bags. I ate cheap broccoli for months.

    1. When ever my garden is down (winter), I always look for good deals and can, freeze, or dehydrate the food items.
      I can't pass up a deal :-)

  3. This is a really good idea, I don't have a food sealer. I guess I could try plastic bags. I love broccoli and never thought of blanching it like that.
    Blessings,
    Susie

    1. Susie,

You don't have to have a food sealer, just make sure all the air is out of the freezer bag.

    1. It's great when you come across deals at the store and freeze for later use.
