Thanksgiving Cold, Garden, and Catalogs

We spent our Thanksgiving holiday with my sister at our place, here in Oklahoma.  Temperatures dropped, we received close to 4 inches of rain, and ice on all the trees and plants.  The weather was conducive to pure relaxation……..actually after working on our parents’ estate, we needed a well deserved break with some good home cooking.

My sister brought these gorgeous flowers for Thanksgiving along with some amazingly delicious pies!!!!

Garden Updates:  Every garden bed has been prepped for winter.  I noticed a volunteer cabbage plant growing nicely on its own along with a batch of celery.  I’m going to keep an eye out and see if they continue to grow with the upcoming winter.

Have you started receiving your new seed catalogs in the mail?  I have just received 4 catalogs.  Stokes, Baker Creek Heirloom, Vermont Bean Seed Company, and Totally Tomatoes.    Have you ever heard of Totally Tomatoes?  I haven’t, can anyone recommend them?

    1. PP,

I can share the ice we received with you :P
As for the rain, I hear you.....it's very depressing not just for humans but our animals too.

  2. Welcome home, Sandy! It's good to hear from you. We received a Totally Tomatoes catalog again today, but we have never ordered from them. Have you ever tried R.H. Shumway's? They have great heirloom and open pollinated seeds, plus the prices are great. I get everything I can from them.

We didn't get any ice, but we got over 6 inches of rain. Everything is a mud bog and I hope to see the sun again tomorrow.

    1. Fern,

Thank you :-) It's nice to be home for a little while at least.
I've never ordered from Totally Tomatoes and never received or heard of R.H. Shumway's. I'll have to check them out, thank you for the referral.
You're lucky you didn't get ice. Wow, that's a lot of rain, did you have flooding in the area? I pray for sun!!! Y'all take care and I hope you dry out over there.

    2. The sun today was wonderful. There was a little flooding in the area, the usual rivers and places, but all in all it wasn't bad. It sure is muddy out there now, though. We're looking forward to more sunshine tomorrow.

    3. Fern,

The sun made it out yesterday for a brief period of time. I'm hoping it warms up today, and the sun comes out to stay for a longer period of time. If you venture outside, I hope you have some boots to keep your feet from getting muddy.

  3. You definitely deserved a good meal at home. But cold and ice! Sheesh. I've only received my Pinetree Garden catalog and I already have a list. Baker Creek stopped sending me catalogs a couple years ago. For some reason I always got their catalog late, like March. By then I'd already ordered most of my seeds so my order from them was always small, which is probably why they stopped sending their catalogs. I really like them though.

    1. Leigh,

Our Thanksgiving meal was delicious and very relaxing, thank you. Yes, very cold and plenty of ice. There's still all kinds of people without power in western OK. Like you, I really like Baker Creek. Your catalogs were delivered on a late delivery. I wonder if this is why they stopped delivering the catalog in your area??

  4. Good to relax a little.

They used to mail the seed catalogs right after Christmas.

    1. Gail,

It's so nice to be able to relax. I'm back to work on Thursday.

Seed catalogs are going out now, I think the companies are looking for plenty of sales before Christmas :-)

  5. We were forecast snow for today, but the temp is 39 degrees and we're getting . . . guess what? Rain. Again. Our grass is still green which is very unusual for this time of year up here in northern Minnesota. You must have had colder temps than we did to get the ice. What's going on here?

I order heirloom seeds from R. H. Shumway, like their prices and have always had good luck with their seeds. In 2013 I ordered several varieties of heirloom tomatoes from Totally Tomatoes and they sprouted with healthy, robust seedlings. Of course, you have to remember I can't grow anything but nice, big, GREEN tomatoes up here (sigh), but the plants were lovely. As soon as I get a heated greenhouse (haha), I'd order from them again.

    1. Mama Pea,

We had plenty of rain, then ice, and some snow. Green grass in MN this time of year is unusual. I'm wondering if the weather got confused and decided to drop ice and snow down here instead of up in MN.

You're the second person who has used and recommended R.H. Shumway, I'm going to check them out, thank you :-)

  6. That ice looks bad. I can cope with about anything but heavy icing scares me. It can really trash the whole county in short order.

    1. Harry,

The ice was bad the first day in our area however, western OK had it really bad. There's still thousands of people without power. I'm not a big fan of ice, people here don't know how to drive on it.

    1. M.E.,

Oh girl, I so understand you've been very busy.
Funny thing, we had ice and cooler temperatures. Today the temperature is peaking up to the 70's.....what happened to our winter?

  8. We have had good luck with seed from Totally Tomatoes. Our favorites come from Sustainable Mountain agriculture in Berea Kentucky.

Phenomenal tomatoes, they are a bit expensive but after the results were tasted we felt their varieties are worth it.

    1. Fiona,

Thanks for the recommendation, I will have to look up those tomatoes and possibly order from Totally Tomatoes.
I'm no worried about the price, I would just like some really good tasting tomatoes!!!
