Letttttuce and Gas

This evening, our local news, Channel 5 News, posted a story about a lettuce shortage.  The story was about a notice written by Crest Grocery store, posted on the display for lettuce.  It apologizes for no lettuce, and indicates there’s a lettuce shortage, due to the weather in California and Arizona.  Notice the last sentence; it indicates the grocery store has been receiving heavy pro-rates on several items.

I wonder what the several items are.  Have you noticed problems with lettuce in your local grocery stores?  Are you aware of shortages of any food at your grocery store?  The last time I went shopping, I noticed the shelves are not stocked as usual, and certain items were not found.  Get your groceries while you can, as lack of groceries will only get worst as the economy falters.

Gas prices dropping, wooohooo……………. It’s nice not to pay close to $100.00 to fill your truck with gas.  Today, we walked away paying under $40.00.

Ultimately, in the end, we as American’s will end up paying for this decrease in gas, with the loss of jobs, or added taxes.

Gas prices in town today are:

Bulldog Man and I went to a flea market/antique show and found a porcelain dish pan in great condition for $20, and an old canning jar tool (for removing and placing the jar in a pressure canner/water bath) for $4.00.    This canning jar tool from earlier years was made better than the tool I received when I purchased my water bath kit.

Since the temperatures were much cooler, I canned several quarts of chicken broth.

I also had 50 pounds of pinto beans needing canned.  Started canning pint and quart jars after going through the pinto beans, pulling out rocks, sticks, and broken beans.  I was able to get about 25 pounds of beans canned, and have another 25 pounds waiting patiently for jars.

While cleaning the pint jars, I stuck my hand inside one with the sponge not realizing the jar was broken, and ended up cutting my thumb.
I think we have enough canned beans for now; the rest will have to wait.

Bulldog Man and I drove up to the big city and went fishing on Saturday, and Monday, being it was a holiday.  I was able to get some nice pictures at Dolese Pond up in Oklahoma City while fishing.

1st day fishing.

Second day fishing.

Unfortunately there were no trout caught; however, we did enjoy the peaceful time together.

What did you do this weekend?

  1. I can't attest to all of Arizona but where I am there is an abundance of lettuce and not high priced. Sorry about the appendage. Ouch!

  3. Kris,

That will teach me to pay more attention to my canning jars when washing them, lol.....
In your area the shelves aren't the same as they were in the past......same here.
It's great not paying high prices when pumping gas in our trucks however, in the long run we will be paying in some way.
    Hugs,
    Sandy

    1. B,

You betcha!!!! Thanks, this was a first for me on canning beans.
Love the prices of gas however, I'm worried about what we will pay in the end for these cheaper gas prices.

  5. Ouch on the cut! I've never canned dried beans but I really should learn. Yours look great.

I shop at Aldi and they've been having plenty of lettuce. I wouldn't have even known about a shortage if I didn't read this post. Fishing photos are fantastic!

    1. Leigh,

That cut is healing however, the area still hurts.
I had to clean, soak, rinse, and heat the beans before canning.

Aldi is a great place to find deals. The other day, I found sweet potato bags for 69 cents each.

Thank you, it was beautiful out there on the pond. We're going fishing again this Saturday :-) want to join us?

  7. Wow you have been busy!
Industrious on the canning front. Hadn't noticed anything on the lettuce front as of yet but did answer one question for me to plant or not to plant?
glad you both had a nice peaceful day fishing!

    1. M.E.,

There's always work to do on the homestead. There are times we do play a bit :-)

I say plant some lettuce, :-) all kinds in your garden. Better to play for seeds than heads or bags of lettuce.

Fishing is our way of relaxing and getting away from stress. We did have fun even though we didn't catch any fish.

      Hugs,
      Sandy

Sandy, I live in a county with a pop. of 1100. We are just lucky if the expiration date on the cold meds at the only store for 60 miles is not expired yet...lol

    1. Janice,

I love Ranger, and I'm so happy he's got a loving home.

Thank you, I enjoy taking pictures of animals and the great outdoors. My pictures are no where near your work. Which by the way your photography is amazing.

Yes, you are lucky the dates on the cold meds haven't expired. I have found expired medicine on the shelves and expired meat in the freezers.

      Have a good evening,
      Hugs,
      Sandy

  10. Thanks for the bean canning pics. I thought I was the only one who canned dry beans! Canned beans are such a time and quality convenience when cooking with beans.

  11. Hey Sandy,

i have not noticed a shortage of lettuce here. Every thing seems pretty well stocked. What i have noticed is that Walmart is carrying less of it generic great value brand and what they do have, it is packaged similiar to the name brands, in the hopes that a person picks up the pricier named brand instead.

Sunset pics are gorgeous...Looks like a fun and relaxing time, too bad no trout through, we finally ate the bass that ND caught this past summer, it was delish! ..

Hugs to you and your family

  12. I don't shop the super markets so have not noticed. Last time I bought lettuce it was a large tub of organic micro greens from Costco (about $3) .. lasted us for a whole week with several salads a day. Our gas got down to $1.49/gallon .. but is starting to creep up.
