I’m doing the happy dance…….
Because I received two packages in my post office
box today. The boxes contained vegetable seeds…… I ordered earlier.
Botanical Interests and Baker Creek are two great
companies to order heirloom seeds from. Botanical Interests sent me a free package of
lettuce seeds, and a nice 2015 desk calendar.
This is one of my favorite times of the year, to be
able to add more seeds to my seed stash in my preps, and in my pile of seeds to
be planted in both the greenhouse and in the garden this spring.
My onion starts will ship on the 19th of
this month, from Dixondale Farms. On or
near the 1st of February, my onions will be placed in the
ground. I can’t wait to see how my
onions come out this year!
I’m thinking within the next two weeks, I will be
pulling out my green house, setting it up with the grow lights, and placing
seeds in containers.
Bulldog Man wants me to also make a diagram on the
computer, outlining how I would like the garden expanded, and rearranged. Our son, Tank has provided us with more truck
tires to add to our garden. As we get
closer to spring, we will need to pull the Sawzall out, to cut the sides walls
off the tires, to prevent water buildup inside the tires before using them in
the garden (a big thanks to Kymber and Jambaloney on this idea).

Not a damned thing here yet except dumping more wood ash on the beds and garden spot. Not sure if I even need to order any seeds this year, Have to do an inventory still and move out of cabin finisher mode.

DeleteWood ash is doing something toward your garden!!! Grab yourself a large cup of joe, a note pad, and a pen/pencil, look through your seeds or your seed journal and make yourself a nice list :-) Give yourself sometime for YOU......
Wow! I haven't even gotten my Baker Creek catalog yet! I look anxiously in the mail box every day. Mine usually seems to be on a later send-out than most folks, but I'm antsy!
ReplyDeleteOur garden is too muddy to do anything with at present. We got a lot of rain in December and then 2 and a half more inches the first couple of days this month, with no time to dry out and no warmth to help. I did (finally) buy a grow light! Planning to get some early starts this year!

Our ground isn't warm enough yet. I get prepared as soon as I start getting the catalogs in the mail. There's only one thing I will plant outside before the last frost.....that's my onions. Everything else will be started inside, then planted outside after the last frost. You'll love your grow light, these things come in handy. I love mine, and will be using them inside my greenhouse.
I just pulled one package of seeds myself this morning! I also use Botanical Gardens. Great minds think alike!

It seems funny to my Alaskan mind to discuss seeds & planting in January. The ground won't be warm enough for that, here, until May or June.

DeleteWe are cooler than Alaska this morning!!! I will plant my onions on the 1st of February. Everything else will be planted inside my home, and won't be planted outside until after the last frost.
That ole lady cracked me up this morning.. I have been scraping and shoveling up lots and lots of chicken poo to throw in my compost pile so it can brew for the spring garden..

You're preparing your compost with some great nutrients!!!! Chicken poo makes for a great compost. Before you know it, you'll be laying compost out in your garden bed, and planting seeds.
Hey, I would check at a thrift store for some rain/rubber boots and overalls, another great place is Academy Sporting Goods store when they have sales. We picked our stuff up on sale there, both hubby and I were able to get our rubber boots really inexpensive there.

Woo hoo on the seed delivery! I will only be starting & growing a few things this year as it looks like I will not be retiring until next year. Here is the city is very shady so can't grow a whole lot, but I still give it a go. I love that Calendar. I still have the 2013 Baker Creek calendar I bought. Think I will frames some of the drawings of veggies to 'decorate' my garden shed at the country.

Growing a few things is good :-) Not retiring until next year.....time to start counting down the days. Calendars with lovely vegetable and flower pictures make great wall photographs. I think you should decorate your garden shed with those drawings. How your Mom doing?
I've got about half or two-thirds of my 2015 garden plotted out on paper (you know, what goes where this year) and have been thinking I really want to dig into my seed stash and get what new seeds I need ordered. But outside of the possibility of some of my choices being out of stock, there's not a real rush to do so because unlike you living in the Banana Belt (1), I can't even start seeds inside until sometime in April! :o]

DeleteWhen I received the catalogs, I was like a kid in a candy store. It's fun plotting your garden out on paper or computer.....it gives you something to look forward to come time to build and plant.
I can't plant anything except onions outside until after our last frost in April. Everything I plant will be inside the house in my greenhouse. I'll use grow lights to get those little boogers growing into nice size seedlings or little plants come time to plant outside.
