Homemade Pancakes

I’m a pancake lover, how about you? I’m here to let you know when I read a post from Mike Yukon, over at Living Prepared  on his Pearled Barley Pancake recipe; I had to ask him how his pancakes tasted. I even asked if kids would like the pancakes.  Mike responded; his neighbors liked them, and he thought kids would like them too.

Mike took pearled barley grain and milled the grain to make flour.  He added ingredients like water, baking soda, sugar, and salt to make the pancake batter.  Because I asked Mike a question on how his pancakes tasted, he contacted me through e-mail, and offered to send me some of his freshly milled flour inside his pancake mix.  I took Mike up on his offer, and several days later I received a package.

Inside this package were two packets, one containing Pearled Barley Pancake Mix, and the other containing Whole Wheat and Barley Pancake Mix.  I was excited about receiving this package and had to make the pancakes, and send Mike a return e-mail on what I thought of his fresh milled flour and pancakes.

After mixing up the batter, and cooking the pancakes in a frying pan on the stove, Bulldog Man and I tried both types of pancake mixes. We loved both types of pancakes; however, our favorite was the Whole Wheat and Barley mix.  I e-mailed Mike pictures of the pancakes, and our thoughts.

Mike, you’re right, once you mill your own flour, you won’t want to go back to the prepackaged flour.  Now, I’m going to have to make sure to put getting a mill on the top of our prepared list of tools to purchase.

    1. Duke,

These pancakes were to die for. Once you've tried them with your own milled flour, you won't want to go back to the prepackaged mixes.

  7. Sandy, thanks for all the kind words and I knew you'd love the pancakes. Just goes to show that you can have meaningful long term food storage that you also use everyday. As soon as I can find a campfire or camp stove waffle iron I'll try making waffles.

    1. Mike,

Yes we love the pancakes with milled flour. So now we've placed a mill on the top of our preparation list to purchase in the near future.

The waffle iron's are a little pricey and hard to find but great to use when camping.
