Union Soldiers Cemetery

Today, Bulldog Man and I wanted to visit a military cemetery to honor and show our respect to fallen military soldiers and their family members.

We drove up to Oklahoma City, to visit a cemetery located across from the 45th Infantry Division Museum off of NE 36th Street, called the Oklahoma Veteran’s Cemetery; formerly known as the Union Soldiers Cemetery.

This cemetery is the final resting place of 63 Army veterans, 3 veteran's wives, and one veteran's daughter. Soldiers buried here served in Army units from Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, & Tenn. Included are three men who fought in the Indian Wars. The cemetery has been re-designated as Oklahoma Veterans Cemetery, and now may be used for the resting place for any honorably discharged member of the Armed Forces of the United States.

While visiting this cemetery, Bulldog Man and I read each headstone, cleared leaves, dirt, and any debris found on each headstone, and made sure the flowers, lights, and flags were standing properly.
There were 6 unknown headstones placed at the cemetery.

This Sergeant First Class severed Vietnam twice, and in WWII.

Before leaving, a prayer was said, acknowledging these men and women for their service and sacrifice for this country and our freedoms.

  1. Very, very humbling. "Unknown"--that one hurts the most.

    1. Susan,

Yes, very humbling. It's very upsetting there were 6 gravestones marked "Unknown".

  6. Oh Sandy! How wonderful was THAT! Not only did you guys visit and show your respect, but you also took the time to groom the area. That really touched my heart!

I'm also a retired military brat. Dad passed away 1 1/2 years ago and had a military funeral. I held it together until the 12 gun salute. I was also married to a military man, and my brother served time as well.

It's so touching to know that there are those out there that still honor and respect the men and women that sacrificed so much of their lives (and families lives) for our country.

    Bless you both!

  7. This just showed up on my blog roll. Blogger has been crazy wonky lately.

That cemetary is awesome, thanks for sharing that. I love to browse and read head stones. I know I am weird.
You almost want to adopt a grave and keep it nice. That is what we did at the cemetary my FIL is buried at. I adopted seniors step sisters grave. But there are hundreds of others I wish I could place flowers on as well and keep nice.
LIke I said.. I know I am weird...

    1. JUGM,

Yes Blogger is a pain in the hiney today.

We were surprise to find a civil war cemetery. You're not weird, I do the exact same thing, lol

Hubby and I walked to each graveside, read the head stone, and cleared the area around it. Replaced falling flowers, and lights.
