Signs of Life

After pulling out my greenhouse, putting it together, and hanging my grow lights, I planted seeds for tomatoes, peppers, and all kinds of herbs.

This morning, I found signs of life in the greenhouse.  Little seedlings of Amish Paste, Sunrise Bumble Bee, and Pink Brandywyne tomatoes were popping up.  I also had Tomatillo’s, Bee Balm Lemon, Borage, Yarrow, Chamomile, Lavender, Hyssop, Basil, Tarragon, and Thyme growing.

I have two more shelves of the greenhouse to fill with pots and seeds.
While these are growing, Bulldog Man and I have a garden fence to remove, and new feedlot panels to install, and garden tires with sidewalls needing cut.  All of these tasks will be handled soon, depending on the weather.

Our local weatherman has indicated cold weather with the potential of more snow to come next week…….LOVELY!!!!!!

In the meantime while waiting on the weather, I’ve been canning more items to fill my pantry, taking inventory on all first aid items, dry and canned goods, and replenishing stock.

I don’t know about y’all, but I’m not pleased with the economy or what’s going on across the world.  The more I read or hear about the world, the more I get aggravated and want to make sure my family is taken care of.

What’s going on at your place?

  1. Same worries here Sandy. Plus with everything going on w/my Mom I feel like I'm running around like a chicken with it's head cut off. I haven't gotten ANY seeds started & don't know if I will this year. Time will tell. We are supposed to move Mama's stuff in this weekend which means I get my garage, foyer & the back of my SUV back. All are stuffed to the gills with stuff waiting to go in her new trailer.

  2. DFW,

Hopefully we both will get things situated and prepared before the problems start in our local areas. I know you're looking forward to moving your Mom and her stuff into her new trailer. Don't work to hard sweetie. Hugs to you and yours.

  3. I think we all would be wise to do whatever we can to take care of making ourselves as safe and secure as possible. This is a good thing to do any time. We never know when difficulties might happen in one form or another.

You really have a green thumb (and fingers) going there, m'dear. That or special secret bulbs in your grow lights! Not even close to time for us way up here in northern MN to think about starting our seeds yet. I'm still in my hibernating knitting/quilting/reading/relaxing mode!

    1. Mama Pea,
I have to second your comment about making ourselves as safe and secure as possible.

These grow lights really make a difference. As for a green thumb or fingers, I'm still in the learning stages. I learn as I go, this is year 4.

I know it's still to cold in Minn....e.....soda (LOL).......for planting outside but you could plant inside?? That is after you come out of hibernation. I so wish I had the patience to knit, quilt, and crochet.

    1. PP,

The Bee Balm will be contained. I can't let it take over my garden :PPPP

  5. Ditto here. But you know that. It is fun to bring a little spring into the house. Don't stress too much about the world. Just keep taking good care of your little corner of it.

    1. Michaele,

It is totally fun to have spring start inside the house. Even though it's cold outside, the little seedlings keep chugging along under the lamps.
No I can't stress too much because if I do, it will make me sick. Thanks for the advice :-)
      Hugs,
      Sandy

  6. Love all your seedlings coming up. I need to plant more of these here too. Last week I was so tempted to plant peas or something in the garden and then ice and frigid for a week!

I don't listen to the radio much and we don't have TV, but in the car I enjoy classical music on NPR. When I catch a glimpse of the news, I notice how they keep emphasizing that the recession is over. Can't help but wonder who they are trying to convince.

    1. Leigh,

Thank you :-) Can you start your peas inside while there's ice outside?

The recession isn't over at all. My thoughts exactly........

  7. For a week now we have been up on the mountain, staying inside because of the ice and cold. I got a nasty cough from going out in the mornings at two or three above zero to put boiling water in the animal troughs. I will be so glad when all this is over.

    1. Harry,

It's really cold outside. I'm sorry to hear you have a nasty cold. Take care of yourself, and dress warm when heading out to take care of your animals.
I've seen heaters for bird baths which keep the water from freezing, would something like this help for your animals?

  8. Wow, I need to not just talk about dragging my mini greenhouse/grow lights from the basement storage room! Look at what you've got growing! Best surprise crop for us last year .. tomatillos! Still enjoying the salsa canned late last summer. You are an inspiration!

    1. Mrs. Mac,

It's cold outside, and needed to get started on my seeds. This time of year puts a smile on my face because spring has officially started at my house. When I see the little seedlings growing inside my greenhouse, I don't think about how cold it is outside.

This is the first year I'm growing tomatillos, and can't wait to make some homemade salsa.

      Thank you!
