Onions, Signs of Spring, Beans

Not too long ago, I ordered my onions from Dixondale Farms out of Carizzo Springs, Texas.  I came across this company through a friend, Sandy, over at the Texan Blog.  She orders her onions from this company, and has been very happy growing onions.

I ordered 1 bundle (approximately 5 dozen onion plants); the Intermediate-Day Variety package, which consists of Candy, Red Candy Apple, and Super Star onions.

My intentions were to plant these onions the first of March.  Temperatures were too cold, and I just couldn’t make myself work outside in the cold.

In the early afternoon hours on Friday, I raked up the straw covering one of my raised garden boxes.  Then, I proceeded to manually till up the entire garden box, preparing the soil for planting.  Gradually, I soaked the entire box with water, and allowed the water to seep into the soil.  After taking a brief break, I came back, and planted 4 rows of Dixondale Farm onions in this one garden box.  Then I covered the entire box with a layer of straw (the same covering I raked up earlier).

Now I need to wait a couple of months before harvesting onions ……. Have I told you I’m not a very patient person, lol…

Spring is practically here.  Sitting on my kitchen window sill are several starts of organic celery.    When I have a root ball on the bottom of each stalk, I will plant each in soil outside in one of my garden boxes.  I’ve found this is the only way I can grow celery in this part of Oklahoma.  In the past, I tried growing celery from seeds and didn’t have much luck.

When my Phal schilleriana orchid, also known as the “Pink Butterfly” starts to bloom, I know spring is not far behind.
Little buds forming, here's one.

Do you have plants blooming right now?

  1. Beans is too funny. Do you think it's the sound of her voice or does he not like her cooking? On onions ... I save my bottoms from my CSA organic scallions (the grocery store ones don't seem to work but I save them too). I let them dry out & then rehydrate them & plant them. Got to do that tomorrow. Probably the only thing, except for flowers, that I will plant this year. Busy season at work & all. p.s. That orchid is really pretty.

    1. DFW,

I believe it has something to do with the music when her show starts. Every time he here's the program start, he's right there. Plus, I believe he loves her dogs.

A perfect way to get your onions going by saving the bottoms of those you're using.

I love this orchid. It's the first time I'm able to keep an orchid growing. This orchid was originally from Sam's Club approximately 5 years ago. The only thing I do is add 1/3 cup water 1 time weekly.

    1. Gail,

      Thank you :-)

While I was planting those onions, I was drooling. I can't wait to harvest them in several months.

  3. LOL I set off my wife's little dog by playing that video. She was running around barking her head off thinking there was an unauthorized canine intruder around.

  5. Definitely way ahead of me too. There is too much other stuff going on and not enough time to get the onions in. I will live vicariously through yours, ha. But yeah, I hope Spring is coming soon, this wet and cold I"m over with (thankfully no snow of course I feel for you with all the snow and ice).

    1. Leigh,

I believe it is...... because my orchid always starts to bloom when spring starts knocking at my door.

My onions are in the ground, as for the peas........I'm not planting them this year. The last two times I planted them, they didn't grow. I will however, plant all kinds of beans. My family loves beans!!!

  8. Nothing blooming here. I do need to plant my early things asap. First I need to uncover the plant light stand that has become the place to drop everything when you come in from the outside!
