Celery

Celery. Over the last couple of months, I would buy celery, at the store, or farmers’ market.  When home, I would cut the entire bottom off, wash the celery stalks, and place them in the refrigerator, wrapped in a wet dish cloth.

So what happens to the cut off end you ask??  I place the cut off end in a bowl with water and place the bowl on my window sill, to allow time for roots to grow.  I change the water in the bowl holding the celery end daily.  After a mass of roots form, I take each celery bottom and plant them in a pot or directly into the garden.  This is how I started my celery this year, instead of using seeds.

Leaving bottoms in water to create roots.

Planted in soil in a garden bed.

How do you grow your celery?

    1. HL,
I think it's the best way to grow celery.
      Have a great day!

  2. Well growing something that requires more calories to consume than it provides seems to go against my sustainable ideology.

But if I did grow celery it would be just the way you are :)

    1. PP,

Your to funny! It does take a lot of effort (calories) to eat, lol

  3. Sandy, I've done the same thing and it works for a home consumer. There are many dishes that celery makes it pop.

Pioneer Preppy, celery this way is free and for special dishes is perfect. I'm sure you would agree with the free part. :-)

    1. Truthfully. I bet I could live my entire life without missing celery. If I eat it it is only because someone stuck it in something and it's too much trouble to pick it out.

    2. Mike,

It does work, and it's relatively easy to do.
One must enjoy celery or anything they grow in their garden. It's apparent, PP wouldn't eat or even grow celery if he doesn't have to.

  4. I have done that too. I love celery. A cupful in a small can of tuna is never enough for me. However, I cannot just bite a celery stalk or chew it up. Somehow, it is nasty that way. I put celery in the pot where I cook any meat. My soup must have celery!

    1. Kimberly,

It may have been too cold up there in your window at winter for the celery.
Try growing them away from your window with light.

  6. Sandy - i saw something like this last year on someone's blog but they said to just cut off the end of the celery, clean it and stick it in the ground. so i tried it and it worked! but my problem is that i have no source of certified, organic celery here on the island - it's all either from california or mexico. so i have to grow my celery from seed!i have 12 little celeries coming up in the greenhouse now and plan to plant a few more in a few weeks to succession harvest.

anyway, it's a great tip! one other thing - if you want beet greens right away and not have to plant the beets from seed, buy some organic beets and plunk them right in the ground - you'll have delicious beet greens in about 2 weeks. cut the beet greens and they will just keep coming back! we got some good, organic beets and planted them last week - soon i'll have my beet greens - woohoo! i love beet greens - teehee!

much love to you and all of yours always! your friend,
    kymber

    1. Sweet Kymber,

It's an easy way to grow celery and I know exactly where my celery comes from before planting the ends in water or soil.

You can also do the same thing with parsnips (placing in water to root). I've done it!
Don't you just love all the little secrets to growing vegetables?

Hugs and love to you and Jam.

  7. I I tried this with Romaine lettuce. It rooted but I don't think I kept it moist enough in the garden bed, it didn't survive. I also put all my onion ends in the garden as well. I usually have a 50% grow ratio.

    1. DFW,

It sounds to me like you've been experimenting too!!!
I'm wondering if the romaine lettuce would work if you placed it directly in a bowl with water (like hydroponics).

  8. Celery is indicated for reducing blood pressure ( the presence of pthalides relax muscles around arteries) and coumarin in Celery enhances the activity of white blood cells. For the guys, chewing celery releases androstenone and androstenol, pheromones that travel up the back of his throat to the nose, causing the body to send off scents and signals to the ladies! So, that celery stick in your Bloody Mary isn't just for stirring!

    1. Julie,

Celery is a vegetable that has so many benefits for the human body. Not everyone likes it. if you can juice celery with other vegetables, general speaking you can't taste it in your drink.

    1. Senior,

Surprise!!!! Now you're going to have to take JUGM to the farmers market and local health food store to pickup several containers of celery so she can plant several batches up on the farm in SC.

    1. Leigh,

Thank you! I've done this process two years now, and it works. What I have learned birds love the celery therefore, I have to place a netting over the celery to keep them away.
