I have gotten a harvest of peas for two years, however, they are eaten immediately by my now 5 year old grandson. Having lived through Hurricane Ike, where we found we could actually make coffee and cook on a small Chiminea (you know, those clay chimney firepit thingies) we decided we needed to prep for real. We have about 3 months of food supplies in our regular rotating pantry and are working on long terms storage. But with only an 1100 sq ft house (with five adults and a two year old) and a VERY tiny patio home yard, it is difficult to find storage space for any more. Am planning to relocate as soon as I can find something I can afford. Thanks for the time you put into your blog-informative AND humorous is the best combination. Please don't stop. We have been repairing our whole lives. We ...Sandy,
We have been repairing our whole lives. We were preppers before that word ever existed. Even though we can never be ready for everything, we do our best and think we can last a while.
The one thing I talk about when I am asked to do seminars is that prepping is only temporary. No matter how much you store it will run out in a worst case situation where you need to live off your preps for several years. If that is all you have then you will stave to death.
In order to survive you have to be somewhat a homesteader to replenish what you are using. That way the preps you do have stored will last and can be used encase of a bad harvest.
That is usually when someone will stand and tell me about their seed bank they have. I follow that up by asking them when do they plant this or that and how long does it take to harvest and even go as far as to ask them how they would put that food up for the winter. If you pull out the seed bank when the lights go out and start planting, you are too late Most just sit down.
It is easy to buy 30 year shelf life food and store it away, it is another thing to collect rain water, grow and process your own vegetables, grains and meats. Until you reach that point, your not prepared.
Sorry for the long comment but I go going there.
So am I entered?

Modern Day Redneckhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17682843961510053146noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5709809754356131123.post-91362857334198095552013-07-19T07:25:26.357-05:002013-07-19T07:25:26.357-05:00Yep, as prepared as you can be.
